The structure of our democracy has seen yet another touch of geographical re - demarcation on the global map of peace. Irrespective of the closeness of the competition and tensions that clouded the electoral atmosphere, which spanned over some four weeks leaving Ghanaians on tenterhooks awaiting the declaration of the mandate to the next commander in chief of the laudable Ghana Armed Forces for the next four years, our credentials of propelling the shield of democracy on the wheels of tolerance was grounded another firm root as it all ended on the under the shed of peace. Of course, sixteen years on the roadmap of a democracy means a lot of trekking, searching, losing, finding and learning great lessons and the stakes are now too high to quit.
Especially In a period when elections in Africa has been a reference points for disputes and fierce contentions, which in some places even leads to armed conflicts and claims the lives of innocent and valuable citizens including women and children, the iconic route engineered by the mechanics of our own electoral process is one that brings people to our rivers to draw from our well of experience and this very truly sings in harmony to the tune of the “Gateway to Africa” pride that Ghanaians so much wallow ourselves in and would give everything to protect.
It is absolutely clear that leading black Africa to Independence on March 6, 1957 has no parallel with contentment to our people as such does not want it to be the only footprint we would leave on the timelines of history but also wish to still be on the forefront and making strides toward strengthening the stakes of the democratic venture harnessed by our determination for self – rule, prosperity, unity, freedom and justice.
In pursuit of this course, nothing appears to be too great a barrier to cross. The search for peace and tranquillity for Africa has not only just been pioneered by Ghana but that by this precedence we have also showed exponential growth in our readiness and commitment to realising the dreams of the founding fathers that indeed “The independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of the African continent”
The differences in political colours, faith, religious and moral values, ethnic/tribal backgrounds among other things, which in many places have been used as tags for making enemies and targeting the same for destruction, has been used by Ghanaians only as mirage from which the longing for unity and prosperity for all appears to be springing.
It is worth noting that after unanimously re – opening and embracing the new chapter of democracy ushered by the groundbreaking referendum of April 28, 1992, multi – party democracy has come to stay as Ghanaians have opened both arms to welcome it and there has ever since been a continuous forward march with the black star of hope and honour to re – define our future of a common destiny of prosperity, unity, freedom and justice.
It is about time we all gently pack away the load of political idiosyncrasies and put our hands to the plough and with that spirit of unity and common destiny nothing can stop us from building our great dream nation for both ourselves and posterity.
Long live our people.
God bless Ghana.
And remember:
Raise high the flag of Ghana,
And one with Africa advance;
Black star of hope and honor,
To all who thirst for liberty;
Where the banner of Ghana free flies,
May the way to freedom truly lie
Arise, arise, O sons of Ghanaland,
And under God march on forevermore
